KEATING TOLD HE CAN'T DRIVE JAGUAR TO VENICE, TAKES THE TRAIN INSTEAD
BOYZONE star RONAN KEATING has missed out on a race to Venice, Italy from London in a classic Jaguar sportscar - because the owner wouldn't let him get behind the wheel.
The Irish singer helped launch a car versus train race across Europe on Thursday morning (29Apr10) - between a 1956 Grand Prix Jaguar D-type and the Orient Express.
Keating had to settle for a seat aboard the Venice-Simplon-Orient-Express train, which is favoured to win the race to Italy, after he was told driving the car would not be an option.
Before the train left Victoria Station, the singer said, "I asked (to drive it) but they wouldn't let me."
The car's owner, Jonathan Turner, will share the responsibility of getting the car to Venice ahead of the train with Octane magazine editor Robert Coucher, who organised the race.
Both the train and the classic car are expected to arrive at their destination on Friday evening

Ronan Keating launches Venice race
Ronan Keating has helped launch a London to Venice car versus train race.
The Boyzone star sat in the rain in an open-top 1950s Grand Prix Jaguar D-type car just before the race began from London's Victoria station.
Then the star moved off to join other passengers on a Venice-Simplon-Orient-Express train that will try to reach Venice before the D-type arrives.
Asked if he would have fancied driving the car to Venice, Ronan replied: "I would have loved to do it. I asked but they wouldn't let me."
Ronan posed for pictures with the car's owner, Jonathan Turner, who will be sharing the driving on the journey to Venice with Robert Coucher, editor of Octane magazine which has organised the race.
With its engine roaring, the D-type moved off from the station forecourt just a few moments before the Orient-Express train began its journey.
The Jaguar will have to get to Venice by 5.56pm on Friday to beat the train.
The D-type, built in 1956, was driven at Silverstone that year by Mike Hawthorn who became motor racing world champion two years later.

RONAN Keating has revealed his next ambition - to be a hobbit. He's even auditioned for a role in the upcoming fantasy movie, but is waiting to hear.
The Boyzone singer auditioned for a role in upcoming fantasy movie The Hobbit – based on the JRR Tolkien novel of the same name, a prequel to the Lord of the Rings trilogy – and is still waiting to hear back.
He said: “I don’t think I'll get the role of the hobbit. But I would like to take on roles which nobody would expect. I don’t want to be reduced to love stories. I’d like to try dark, edgy roles. I need a challenge.”
Keating – who has three children, Jack, 11, Marie, nine, and four-year-old Ali, with his model wife Yvonne – is even considering leaving his native Ireland to live in Los Angeles to pursue his big screen dream.
He added: “If it goes well with the movies we might be there more often. So far I planned to go there for holidays with my family in summer. But we return in September and the kids go back to school in Ireland. But we'll see.”
Although he is ambitious to break into acting, Keating has no plans to quit music and is loving working with Boyzone again, who were rocked last October when member Stephen Gately died suddenly.
Keating told website freundin.de: “My future definitely lies in the music business. I will continue to work as a solo artist. But I‘m now in a situation where I can take a break from my solo career. I don’t want to eliminate that possibility but currently Boyzone is my priority. I just love to work with
