SINGER RONAN KEATING ON GETTING HITCHED AT 21:
Marriage wreck my career? No way
By Charlene Chua
GETTING married to his model girlfriend at 21 could have spelt career suicide.
After all, Boyzone member Ronan Keating was not only one-fifth of the hottest Irish boy band then, he was also the pin-up fantasy of millions of girls all over the world.
But fast forward 11 years and sales of 32 million albums, and the guy with the baby blue peepers is still a force to be reckoned with.
Four of five of his solo albums have gone straight to No1 on UK pop charts, including his last album, Songs For My Mother, that was released in March.
Keating, 32, who was in town for the opening ceremony of the IWC Schaffhausen ION Orchard Boutique, told The New Paper: 'At that point, I just met someone I wanted to spend forever with. My family is the love of my life.
'If people don't want me for who I am just because I'm married, then that's their choice. I won't dwell on such things.'
Understanding fans
But he felt his fans are an understanding bunch who have 'grown' with him. They even ask him about his family when they meet him.
Back in their heyday, however, Keating said Boyzone fans would jump onto the back of their tour truck and fall off only when the truck rounded a corner.
'It was a crazy time. We would get out of the vehicle to check if the fans were okay. They always were, and looked very happy as well,' he said with a laugh.
By the age of 21, he had been with Boyzone - with Stephen Gately, Mikey Graham, Keith Duffy and Shane Lynch - for five years and had 'done everything', even travelling around the world at least six times. So marriage was 'naturally' the next step.
Keating and his wife, former model Yvonne Connolly, who is three years older than him, have three children - Jack, 11, Marie, 9 and Ali, 4.
The family man insists he would give up his career for his wife and kids in a heartbeat.
'Practically five songs on every one of my albums were written for my family. For example, The First Time was written for Yvonne.
'When I'm home in Dublin, I take my kids to school and make breakfast and lunch for them. I really enjoy these things.'
And what of the other loves of his life? The fitness junkie is preparing for next week's Chicago marathon, and plans to climb Mount Everest in 2013.
Golf is a favourite 'getaway' sport and he confessed to being ecstatic about having played twice with Tiger Woods.
His other 'idol' moments?
Meeting ex-US president Bill Clinton, ex-South African president Nelson Mandela and the late Pope John Paul II.
Keating's fans can expect his next album, entitled Winter Songs, in November. It features covers of Christmas classics such as Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas, Little Drummer Boy and several self-penned compositions.
He also has plans to star in a movie and said he has been approached for possible roles in an actioner and a slapstick comedy.
'I can't say more at this moment because nothing has been finalised.
'But I hope I have a face more suited for action than comedy.'

Fancying Ronan Keating is sick and wrong, but let's do it anyway
Ronan Keating used to be a puny little thing, especially compared to beefy bandmates like... nah, we've forgotten their names... but it seems he spent the £4.99 he made from the Boyzone reunion tour on some hand weights from Argos, as now he's like well buff and stuff.
Ronan shows off his new body, and some equally grown-up tattoos, in the video for his new single Stay. We're not sure if we actually fancy him or if it just feels like we should. But there's definitely something about this picture that we can't stop staring at.

Ronan Keating has been hitting the gym - and hard!
"Ronan Keating" and "beefy hunk" - words we never thought we'd write in the same sentence.
But here's the Irish crooner giving 50 Cent a run for his money on the set of the video for new single, Stay. 50 Pence, anyone? We're told: "Ronan's been hitting the gym hard, and pumping iron big time. He looks amazing."
It still feels wrong to drool...

Ronan wins flex factor
RONAN KEATING has done a GARY BARLOW and got all ripped - as you can see in this clip from the video for new single Stay.
He has been working out and dieting for the promo and launch of next album Winter Songs in November.
Ronan said: "I'm training four to five times a week. It's hard to manage with a busy work schedule and family life.
"But hardest is sticking to a diet, especially when on the move with work.
"I'm meant to stick to low carbs, low dairy and low sugar, and not meant to have alcohol - but I have to have a glass of red wine now and again."
I'm told the singer now has just 5.5 per cent body fat, while 007 DANIEL CRAIG had seven per cent in that beach scene from Casino Royale as he emerged from the sea in his trunks.

Jeremy Clarkson: Duel
Jeremy Clarkson, Ronan Keating & Kate Silverton
Welcome to my new DVD, Duel - it's all about challenges and some big questions. Which car makes the most smoke while going sideways - a Lamborghini Murcielago SuperVeloce or a Vauxhall VXR8 Bathurst S? What is best at drifting? - the Jaguar XKR, the Lotus Evora, Audi's R8 V10 or BMW's M3? To find out, I globe-trot from sun-drenched Spain to Silverstone via Oxfordshire and Swindon.
There is serious science too. Can The Stig drift a car while wearing wellies? Can I corner in flippers? Can Formula One ace Anthony Davidson slide a car - in ice skates? Who is the best at off road driving? - Newswoman Kate Silverton, rugby's Matt Dawson, singer Ronan Keating - or me? Which is fastest - a car or a man? Find out as the Aston Martin v12 Vantage sprints against flying rugby winger Tom Varndell in a 100 metre drag race.
And at last, The Stig goes head to helmet against The Tiff. The white-suited racing driver and I join forces against Vicki Butler-Henderson and Tiff Needell. There's carnage in an auto-test and I push the 190mph Aston Martin DBS Volante to the limit against Vicki in a £150,000 Ferrari California. I also pick a Ford Focus RS for a road race against his'Stigness in a Lamborghini Gallardo Spyder. Who will win?
There's more. What will hit the ground first from 150 feet up a penny or a Ford Scorpio? Can the Stig ride a bicycle? And can a man with a rubbish car get it home using no fuel at all. just a catapult. Meanwhile, there's a terrible accident with a Morris Marina and a piano and everything else explodes including Ronan Keating.

Boyzone's Ronan loves to bring family on Archerfield trips
By MARTIN DEMPSTER
HE is a global pop star who could pick any five-star resort in the world to get away from it all.
But Boyzone frontman Ronan Keating likes nothing better than taking his family on holiday to East Lothian.
The keen golfer has even become a member of the Archerfield Links course after holding a charity event there last year.
He was there again at the weekend for the latest Ronan Keating & Sir Ian Botham Charity Golf Classic, and told the Evening News the area had become his favourite holiday spot.
The 32-year-old said: "I come up here outside the event as well, with friends and my family, too. I love bringing the kids here. When I'm away a lot I want to go somewhere with my three kids and feel they are being entertained and there's certainly a good family atmosphere at Archerfield."
Keating, who performed at a gala dinner in a marquee on the Archerfield estate on Sunday, and Botham raised over £135,000 from their event last year.
Among those taking part this time around were rugby star Matt Dawson, snooker's Dennis Taylor and former football stars Trevor Steven and Phil Babb.
Keating added: "While we started up at Gleneagles, it was such a great event at Archerfield last year that we decided to keep it here and I think this is it now – I don't think we'll be moving anywhere because we love it here.
"With Muirfield and all the other great courses around, some people might have thought they were mad when it first came out that they were going to build two courses at Archerfield.
"But what they've done here is unbelievable. They've made it very special and very exclusive, I suppose, but, at the same time, it's also very homely and I think the staff have a lot to do with that.
"There are some great houses on the site, too, and, all in all, it is a really special place."
The Open returns to Muirfield in 2013. "I've never played Muirfield but I would certainly like to," Keating said. "I love my golf and Barry, who has looked after me for 15 years, and I travel around the world with our golf clubs.
"Any city we get to, we want to get the golf bag out and hit a few balls. It's a great way for me to shut down, switch off and get away from it all."
Next up for Keating on the golf front is the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship, a star-studded pro-am being held at St Andrews, Carnoustie and Kingsbarns at the beginning of October
